About

Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) began constructing Wheeler Dam in 1933 as part of its New Deal-era mission to modernize the Tennessee River valley by improving navigation, generating power, and controlling floods. The dam was completed in 1936 and marked one of the major infrastructure projects of the era, employing thousands of workers and transforming the region’s economy. Standing 72 feet high and extending 6,342 feet across the Tennessee River, Wheeler Dam holds back the 67,070-acre Wheeler Reservoir, which features 1,027 miles of shoreline. The facility includes 11 generating units with a net dependable capacity of around 402 megawatts, and two locks (one 110 × 600 ft and the other 60 × 360 ft) that accommodate large barge traffic and help overcome a 52-foot change in elevation between reservoirs.

Beyond power generation and navigation, Wheeler Dam has had a profound local impact—opening access to industries, enabling recreation on the reservoir, and helping to tame the once-troublesome Muscle Shoals rapids. The dam also created new opportunities for tourism and lakeside communities that continue to thrive around the Wheeler Reservoir today. Its construction was a cornerstone of TVA’s early success, representing progress, innovation, and the promise of economic renewal during one of America’s most challenging decades. Today, the area offers boating, fishing, and shoreline development, and the dam itself stands as a lasting symbol of engineering, regional transformation, and the New Deal legacy that shaped modern North Alabama.
